What are the application deadlines for Fall 2017?

May I enroll in the Spring semester?
We do not accept Spring applications for graduate admissions at this time.

Where do I send my materials?
You will be requested to upload your supporting documents while completing your application.

Who do I contact if I have questions?

How do I log into my application?
Once you've create a log-in username here, you will receive an email with instructions on setting a password to access your application. if you are having issues logging into your portal please contact the Office of Technology Services. They can be reached at supportdesk@iit.edu or 312-567-3375.

How do I know if my materials have arrived?
Processing time is generally 5-7 days but may take up to 14 days during the peak of the application cycle. You can check your application status by logging into your App Tracker at any time.

Is a portfolio required?
Yes. A portfolio is required for ALL graduate programs; we will only accept electronic submissions. In words and images, your portfolio demonstrates your accomplishments, expertise, and preparedness for the selected degree program.

How many letters of recommendation are required?
Two letters are required, typically from professors and/or employers. We prefer professors or parties that can assess your academic work. You will be required to input the recommendor's name and email address during the application process; they will receive an electronic invitation allowing them to type in their recommendation.

How can I apply for a scholarship?
We do not require a separate application form for scholarship consideration. Interested students will need to apply by the priority deadline listed above. All scholarships are merit-based and recipients will be selected by the Graduate Admission Committee during the general admission review.

When will I receive the admission/denial decision?
The decisions are released in March. Initial decision notifications will be sent out via email and official letters will follow. Please keep your mailing address up to date. To prevent your spam settings from deleting our emails, add our email address in your online address book. If you are awarded a scholarship, you will be notified within your admission letter.

When do I need to respond?
Your letter will include a date with instructions on how to proceed. Last year, our admitted applicants responded by May 15. An extension may be granted if circumstances merit one.

Is a deposit required?
A non-refundable tuition deposit of $300 is required to reserve your place as an incoming student. Your deposit for Fall 2017 is due May 15th. All deposits must be submitted through the myIIT Portal and may be paid by electronic check or credit card.

Can I defer my admission for a year?
Admitted applicants can defer up to one year. Scholarships however do NOT carry over to the next year. A student must reapply for any awarded scholarship.

Are there opportunities for teaching assistantships?
We do require an application for teaching assistantships consideration. Admitted students who’ve decided to attend will be able to apply for fellowship or assistantship opportunities during the summer before the fall semester begins. Teaching assistant assignments are made a week before the beginning of each term and are approximately $2500-$4500 per semester.

What are the estimated costs of your program?
Tuition is charged by credit hour. The estimated expenses below are based upon the 2016-2017 tuition rate, with an estimated increase of 5-7% each year.

Students in the Masters degree programs take between 15-18 credits per semester.

What is the professional statement requirement?
Your professional statement should be written in essay format and should include discussion of your reasons for pursuing graduate study, your academic background, your research interests (if applicable), relevant professional experience or related accomplishments to date, and your career goals. A typical statement is between 500-2000 words in length. We encourage you to submit your Curriculum Vitae along with the personal statement.

What are the transcript requirements for international students?
Transcripts need to be submitted through the online application. If admitted, you must submit official, original documents upon arrival on campus. If your degree is not listed on your transcript, you will also need to submit a separate degree certificate.

Individual mark sheets are required from all institutions that issue them (e.g., Indian universities). Consolidated transcripts from those institutions cannot be accepted.

If your prior institution does not use the 4.0 scale grading system, the Graduate Admissions Office will convert your grades to that system upon review of your transcripts.

What if my transcripts are not in English? Do I have to submit the original transcripts as well as a certified translation?
Yes. International students must submit transcripts in both the native language and in English in order for us to evaluate your credentials. Translations must include the official seal/stamp of the translator and verify their credentials as a translator.

Do you require GRE scores?
We require official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores sent directly to IIT by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for all applicants. The GRE must have been taken within the past 5 years. You must allow 3-4 weeks for the scores to arrive at IIT. Please ask ETS to send your scores to institution code 1318; no department code is required.

Do you require TOEFL/IELTS scores from international students?
International students whose education was completed in a language other than English are required to submit TOEFL scores. The TOEFL/IELTS must have been taken within the past 2 years. Scores must be sent directly from ETS and student copies will not be accepted. You must allow 3-4 weeks for the scores to arrive at IIT. IIT's institution code is 1318; a department code is not needed.

What are the minimum requirements for the TOEFL and IELTS exams?
A minimum TOEFL score of 550/80 (paper-based/Internet-based test) or a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 is required for admission consideration. Admitted students with a TOEFL score between 550-599 (paper-based) or 80-89 (Internet-based test), or an IELTS score between 5.5-6.5, or those who have a significantly low verbal score on the GRE exam, may be required to take one or more English courses during their graduate study at IIT. Any English requirements will be noted on the admission letter.

What is required of the Financial Affidavit form?
All non-U.S. students must submit this form before immigration documents can be issued. The Affidavit of Support must provide certified evidence of adequate funds to meet tuition and living expenses for a proposed program of study. You must upload the form along with all supporting documentation in your App Tracker. You may submit your financial support documents after being notified of admission.

For the first year, The Affidavit of Support must have the sponsor's guarantee of support. Section 3 on the form must bear the seal and signature of a bank or government official. A letter bearing the bank's seal and signature stating that funds can be transferred may be attached to the affidavit. An I-20/DS-2019 cannot be issued until an acceptable International Graduate Student Financial Affidavit of Support and certification has been approved by IIT. All three sections of the form must be completed, and you must include a copy of the biographical page of your passport.

What is required of the passport?
A copy of your passport identity page must be submitted through your App Tracker. You may submit your passport after being notified of admission.

Is the IIT Architecture programs eligible for OPT?
Yes, the following programs are eligible: B.Arch, M.Arch, MLA, M.Arch/MLA & M.S Arch.
Optional Practical Training is for undergraduate and graduate students with F-1 status who have completed or who have been pursuing their degrees and are permitted by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to work for at most 12 months. How do I schedule a visit to the IIT College of Architecture?
We invite you to visit the College of Architecture to view our facilities, meet with admissions staff and see the student work in progress. We recommend visiting on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm when architecture design studios are in session. Individual visits to the College of Architecture begin by scheduling an appointment through the Graduate Admissions Office (312-567-3020 or gradstu@iit.edu). Please indicate that you are interested in visiting with the Architecture department, a visit to our department will then be coordinated.
