Dr. Sabatino appointed Interim Dean of IIT College of Architecture

Dr. Michelangelo Sabatino has been appointed as Interim Dean of IIT’s College of Architecture for a one-year term. Sabatino is an architect and historian whose interdisciplinary research and teaching speaks to the intersections between design, culture, and technology in the built and natural environment.

Sabatino earned a professional degree in architecture at the Università IUAV di Venezia and a doctorate in art and architectural history at the University of Toronto, and pursued a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University. Sabatino taught at Yale University and the University of Houston before his appointment to IIT as Professor and Director of the PhD Program in Architecture.

Sabatino received fellowships from the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montréal, The MacDowell Colony, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center, the Wolfsonian-FIU and most recently The Newberry Library in Chicago. Sabatino’s research has been funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (GAHTC), the Canada Council for the Arts, the Graham Foundation, the Rice Design Alliance, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Terra Foundation for American Art. Sabatino publishes regularly in scholarly journals and anthologies. His monograph Pride in Modesty: Modernist Architecture and the Vernacular Tradition in Italy (2011) was recognized with multiple awards, including the Society of Architectural Historians’ Alice Davis Hitchcock Award. His newest book, Canada – Modern Architectures in History (2016), is co-authored with Rhodri Windsor Liscombe.
