"Balloon Paradise" in Crown Hall

Students Erin Huang and Su Jeong Lee of Prof. Jordan Kanter's Summer Studio, "Modulating Ruin: Modular Strategies for Recolonizing the Packard Plant," pin-up and present inside of a half scale component of their project proposal, "Balloon Paradise."

Concept Statement:

Each building was built for a purpose (function), but after several decades the original function may no longer be whats needed. Over time, some of the buildings became abandoned because the spaces were too specific to an outdated function. "Balloon" is the most flexible way to create new space, it can be changed very fast and assembled very easily. This way, people can change the program at any time and continue to make use of existing structures until the end of the buildings' life.
