U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush was first elected to Congress in 1992. Since his swearing-in in 1993, he has proudly represented the 1st Congressional District of Illinois. He is a senior member of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee where he serves as the Ranking Democratic Member of the Energy and Power Subcommittee. Rush is also a member of the Subcommittees on Communications and Technology and Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade. Throughout his career in Washington, Rush has led numerous legislative initiatives that have been signed into law including the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, which instituted landmark reforms of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Congressman Rush was born on November 23, 1946 in Albany, Georgia. His family moved to Chicago and at the age of 17, Rush enlisted in the United States Army, where he served from 1963 until he received an honorable discharge, in 1968. Prior to serving in the House, Congressman Rush served in the Chicago City Council from 1983–1993. He received a bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University, a master’s degree in political science from the University of Illinois, and a Masters of Theology from McCormick Seminary.
