The Turn Center Studio

For the second year in a row, as part of a partnership between the IIT College of Architecture and Bright Star Community Outreach, Professor Eva Kultermann is leading a studio in the design of a community services center in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood. The Bronzeville Turn Center is being developed to provide counseling, mentorship, workforce development and other social services aimed at minimizing negative factors that cause violence, while increasing protective influences that foster community.

The studio is focused on the effective regeneration of urban areas, one of the major challenges facing Chicago and cities around the US. The goal is to provide a vibrant physical environment and social and economic opportunities for local community residents.

The studio will submit a survey of the site, aid in the definition of organizational, image, functional and economic goals, and generate potential design solutions. The designs will be presented to the Turn Center leadership who will then decide which of the designs best meets the needs of the community.

IIT Architecture is committed to making a difference in our shared neighborhood of Bronzeville and promoting an enduring partnership that offers solutions to the challenges in our community.
