Architecture at IIT

Why Study at the IIT College of Architecture?

At the IIT College of Architecture, you will encounter the world through an international student body and have the opportunity to address real-world problems through community design and planning projects. Upon graduation, you will have gained a rigorous technical education and be well-prepared for professional practice, graduate studies or careers in construction management, urban planning or historic preservation. Our students have benefitted from high placement rates in the profession and in graduate school.

Located in Chicago, the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) is one of the largest and most international architecture schools in the United States. With more than 600 students from 50 countries and 95 faculty members, the school embodies the global metropolis in miniature. Our faculty are international prize-winning architects, scholars and engineers. Within the last 5 years, our faculty have won 19 regional design and planning awards as well as 6 national design awards from the American Institute of Architects, American Society of Landscape Architects, American Planning Association, and others. International faculty recognition has included selection for the Venice Biennale, National Endowment for the Arts Grants, and the European Prize for Public Space, among others.

As IIT Architecture focuses on a future of global urbanization, it remains true to its legacy as a place of rigorous thinking and making. IIT is a place where it matters how things are made — whether it be a door, a building, or a city. The city of Chicago provides the inspiration and the testing ground for our explorations, as students learn directly from one of the world’s greatest metropolises. The IIT Main Campus is a world-famous ensemble of modernist architecture, planning, and landscape architecture. IIT Architecture is housed in Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s masterful S. R. Crown Hall, a National Historic Landmark and one of the most significant buildings of the twentieth century. The McCormick Tribune Campus Center (MTCC) was designed by Rem Koolhaas’s Office of Metropolitan Architecture, one of the world’s most influential architecture firms. The campus landscape is designed by Alfred Caldwell and renewed by Peter Schaudt.

Our courses are grouped into five coordinated curricular concentrations: Design; Technology; History, Theory and Culture; Design Communication; and Professional Practice. Each strand is led by a faculty expert to provide students with the context, concepts, and techniques of an integrated education. Our innovative Cloud Studio brings together students from all degree programs to research and design the new metropolis. Our programs of visiting professors and lecturers contributes directly to these projects; our students are taught by the world’s leading architects, landscape architects, artists, critics and policy makers.

IIT Architecture welcomes students, faculty, and guests from around the globe who share our interest in the future of the built environment. We hope you will join us as we reshape, rewrite and rethink our profession.
