Expertise
In addition to his role as dean of the College of Architecture, Reed Kroloff has been a leader in the fields of architecture, urbanism, and design for more than 25 years. He has managed top design programs; edited Architecture, then the profession’s leading design publication; spoken at gatherings such as TED and the Aspen Design Conference; and advised architects and clients on some of the most significant projects of the last 20 years, leading the New York Times to describe him as “the man with the list at architecture’s party.”
Prior to his arrival at Illinois Institute of Architecture, Kroloff served as the director of the renowned Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and as dean of Tulane University School of Architecture in New Orleans, which he led through Hurricane Katrina and the city’s recovery. While he served as editor-in-chief of Architecture, the magazine received more awards for editorial and design excellence than any publication of its type and quickly became the nation’s leading design publication.
Kroloff is also a founding principal of jones|kroloff, a unique advisory practice that develops strategy for clients in the architecture and design industry. An edited list of the firm’s clients includes the Friends of the High Line, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the Mexican Ministry of Culture, the University of Chicago, Yale University, the Aspen Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National AIDS Memorial Grove, the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial Commission, the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Interior Designers, the Chicago Architecture Center, Motown Records, and the History Channel.
Kroloff writes and lectures widely, has appeared in a number of television programs, and is a regular critic at professional organizations and architecture schools across the country. He holds degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and Yale University, has practiced architecture in Texas and Arizona, and was the recipient of the American Academy in Rome’s 2003 Rome Prize Fellowship. He has served on numerous boards and advisory councils.
