College of Architecture Facilities Policies

In this guide you will find the procedures and policies for the College of Architecture at IIT (CoA). All CoA students are expected to abide by the policies set forth herein. For IIT university-wide policies please see the IIT Student Handbook, which is available here."

Policies for Building Maintenance and the Open Studio Environment

Faculty, students, and staff are to observe common considerations in utilization of the College’s facilities and services. Additional consideration is to be extended to others who share the collective space. Damaging or defacing College facilities or installing any unauthorized or inappropriate images on the public media, lockers, walls, and common computers will not be tolerated and are subject to disciplinary action.

There is absolutely no pinning, nailing, or adhering any material to the wall panels, windows or lockers in the College.

Public aisles, egress routes, and exhibit areas are to be kept clear of all debris and personal items of value so as to not interfere with the cleaning of the facilities or the use and convenience of other students.

Student projects (models and drawings) left in common exhibit areas will be removed and disposed of unless identified for a specific display period or prior arrangements are made with the CoA office.

All public areas are to be returned to their original condition and arrangement after use for meetings, presentations, or other events. Crown Hall’s lower level furniture and related items may not be removed from the lower core area.

Electrical appliances (refrigerators, coffee makers, portable stoves, heaters, etc.) are considered a fire hazard by the Chicago Fire Department and therefore are not permitted in student work areas. Any appliance(s) found in the studio areas will be removed.

Bikes, skateboards and roller blades and similar recreational equipment is not allowed inside any CoA buildings. Due to the public safety concerns, convenience for building visitors and the damage to the building facilities, bicycles must be locked to the bicycle racks provided by the university. Any bicycles locked to the buildings or railings, interior or exterior, will be removed.

No sports activities are allowed inside CoA buildings.

The CoA office and/or the IIT Office of Student Affairs must approve all public postings. Please contact the administrative office for approved posting locations.

BUILDING HOURS AND ACCESS

During the school year, Crown Hall and 3410 are unlocked from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Architecture students have access to Crown Hall, 3410, and the Minerals & Metals Building (M&M) 24 hours a day, seven days a week with their IIT ID card.

Important: During the summer months, Crown Hall and 3410 are open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students who aren’t currently enrolled in classes and require access after hours must obtain permission by submitting a request with their name and ID number to the CoA Office.

GENERAL POLICIES (Crown Hall, 3410, and M&M)

The following policies must be complied with for the benefit of all who work in Crown Hall and all other College of Architecture facilities. Those unable to observe the general building guidelines may be required to utilize alternative accommodations.

Smoking Policy:

In compliance with the City of Chicago’s ordinance regarding smoking in public buildings smoking of any kind is not permitted inside any public building. Additionally, smoking outside of the buildings is restricted to the area at least 15 feet away from the building entrances or window openings. Please note that smoking on any landing or porch area is strongly discouraged.

Alcohol Policy:

Alcoholic beverages may not be served on school property unless prior permission is obtained. To secure permission, an Alcohol Service Request form (available in the CoA Office) must be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs (MTCC 209) for approval at least two weeks prior to the event. All alcohol service must be in compliance with State of Illinois laws and all University and Student Organization policies. No alcohol will be served to anyone under the legal drinking age of twenty-one (21).

Building Security:

Due to the open and public nature of the building, students should not leave their personal belongings unattended in studio, offices, lounges, bathrooms, and the library or in any other area of the building. IIT and CoA are not responsible for lost or stolen items for students and visitors to the building. Found items should be taken to the Graham Resource Center (library), where there is a lost and found collection.

Important: Doors may not be held open after regular building hours. Students without their IIT ID Card and unregistered visitors are required to gain access by contacting Public Safety. If you see a suspicious person, contact Public Safety immediately at 312.808.6363. For more information about campus safety, please see www.iit.edu/public-safety. Public Safety officers will escort students to cars or dorms in the evening upon request. Please contact their non-emergency number, 312.808.6300 for assistance.

Student Lockers:

Students can obtain lockers for securing personal items and limited studio supplies. Two students are designated to share each locker. Available lockers and keys can be obtained from John Kriegshauser in the Materials Lab, M&M Building, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You must bring $10 as a deposit to obtain your key. This $10 will be returned upon return of the key. The $10 deposit will be forfeited for lost keys.

Maintenance and the Studio Environment:

Faculty, students, and staff are to observe common considerations in utilization of the College’s facilities and services. Additional consideration is to be extended to others who share the collective space. Damaging or defacing College facilities or installing any unauthorized or inappropriate images on the public media, lockers, walls, and common computers will not be tolerated and are subject to disciplinary action.

Exhibit and Work Presentation Policy:

In order to preserve the building’s interior finishes and the wooden panels in Crown Hall’s Center Core, the College maintains a pin-up policy regarding allowed attachment methods. There is absolutely NO PINNING OR NAILING to the panels, windows, or student lockers. The College has eliminated confusion over which tapes to use by offering one approved adhesive that works on a variety of materials. Most materials can be mounted onto the partition panels by utilizing the shop approved double-sided chart mount squares. These are available to students at wholesale price in the M&M Model Shop. Please make sure to use the approved chart mount when exhibiting work on the panels. The College is obliged to enforce this policy without exception. Damage to the wood panels or other surfaces will be the responsibility of the exhibitor/student.

Absolutely no duct tape or “permanent” mounting squares are allowed on any surface in the college.

If you have a special problem mounting or hanging your work, contact John Kriegshauser at kriegshauser@iit.edu in the Model Shop.

Public aisles, egress routes, and exhibit areas are to be kept clear of all debris and personal items of value so as to not interfere with the cleaning of the facilities or the use and convenience of other students. Student projects (models and drawings) left in common exhibit areas will be removed and disposed of unless prior arrangements are made with the CoA office.

Open House – Clean Up & Preparation:

At the end of the academic year Crown Hall and 3410 are cleared of student work and extensively cleaned in preparation for the College of Architecture Open House Exhibition and Commencement Exercises. The building cleaning schedule corresponds to the final studio review schedule. All studios must be cleared within 48 hours of the scheduled final studio review. Desk areas (top and related floor area) are to be cleared of all personal belongings. Students and the studio professors are responsible for clearing the studio areas and proper disposal of all materials in the proper containers.

The Open House Exhibition will be installed for approximately three weeks. Students interested in retaining their work from the Open House Exhibition must do so before the date posted by CoA staff in the spring semester. Remaining work will be discarded. The College cannot be responsible for damaged or lost projects. Any installations that are determined to be an operational obstruction or that create a potential hazard may be removed or modified without notice.

ROOM RESERVATIONS AND SCHEDULING EVENTS

The College of Architecture Main Office is responsible for scheduling rooms for events held in Crown Hall, 3410 S. State Street, or M&M. Any group or individual, including an instructor, who wishes to use a room for any purpose other than a regularly scheduled class (e.g. a speaker, make-up class, or committee or organization meeting) must submit a room request to the CoA office through the virtual EMS system. A confirmation will be sent to the person via e-mail or fax. Please contact Christine Manuel cmanuel1@iit.edu with any questions about room reservations.
