Uptown Kulturhus

B Arch, 3rd Year Spring, 2014

Chicago’s Uptown Kulturhus was developed to blur and soften the boundaries between the many disparate cultures of Chicago’s Uptown Neighborhood. From Lake Michigan westward, the diversity of Uptown is mediated by zoning and demographic transitions that abruptly subdivide the neighborhood and its many cultures. The Kulturhus is intended to bridge across the cultural separations, by conceptually occupying the space between the cultures, and providing a diverse social meeting hub with uses ranging from galleries to performance spaces to classrooms all surrounded by a tea house.
