THE COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY CAMPUS: DOCUMENTING AND PRESERVING AN AMERICAN ICON

Campus architecture holds the key to the cultural development of planning, landscape, urbanism, and communities across the nation. The roundtable convenes at IIT, one of the most notable prototypes for holistic campus planning, to explore the value and methodologies of maintaining documentation and histories of campus architecture as a unique typology that has developed over the last several centuries. The discussion is followed with a brief tour of landmark IIT buildings, led by IIT faculty Michelangelo Sabatino and John Ronan. A wine reception follows.

Michelangelo Sabatino, Professor and Director of PhD Program in Architecture, College of Architecture, IIT, curates an aerial overview of the evolution of the IIT campus.

Natalie Shivers, Associate University Architect, Princeton University, describes how Princeton University & Neighboring Institutions: The Campus Guide (Fall 2015) documents the planning, landscape and architectural evolution of the Princeton campus, historically and to the present day.

Mark Jarzombek, Interim Dean, School of Architecture, MIT describes why and how MIT: The Campus Guide (Spring 2016) documents MIT’s founding principles and iconic buildings.

Blair Kamin, Architecture Critic, The Chicago Tribune, discusses his research and approach to Amherst College: The Campus Guide (Fall 2018), an insider’s historical tour around the grounds, the people, culture, and educational philosophies that shaped this New England campus.

Dietrich Neumann, Professor, History of Modern Architecture & Urbanism, Brown University and The Campus Guide App editor, talks about the making of the premiere IIT: The Campus Guide app, and the difference between the Campus Guide book and the app.

John Ronan FAIA, Professor, College of Architecture, IIT, tours IIT campus and discusses his design for the new Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship.
