FLORENCE KNOLL: MODERNIST DESIGN PIONEER

Florence Knoll Basset (BS ARCH ’41) recently passed at the age of 101.

Knoll studied at IIT Architecture under Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, worked with Bauhaus architects Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer, and later became a Modernist master herself by creating the iconic aesthetic and design of mid-20th-century American office interiors.

Florence Knoll's clean, functional forms were definitive of the Knoll Associates brand, and her two decades of creative direction established Knoll as one of the most prestigious and recognizable design firms in the world.
