IIT College of Architecture welcomes all to a lecture with Maurice Cox and other architects during the “Maurice in Conversation” lecture on Thursday, October 26 at 5 p.m. in S. R. Crown Hall.
Architecture professors María Villalobos-Hernandez and Michelangelo Sabatino are co-authoring a biography on Cox, whose career is highlighted by his position as Chicago Department of Planning and Development Commissioner, from which he resigned in August. Cox spearheaded INVEST South/West, a community development initiative aimed at reversing decades of disinvestment on Chicago's South and West Sides.
“For three decades, Maurice Cox has worked tirelessly to regenerate American cities through the lens of social justice and design excellence, against considerable odds and with remarkable results,” Sabatino says.
Kenneth Christensen, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs, will begin the two-hour event, highlighted by a discussion with Cox, Villalobos-Hernandez, and Sabatino. Fellow collaborators will join the discussion to provide insight about Cox’s ideas and contributions before an audience question and answer session and a reception at 7 p.m.
