MCHAP 2014/15 Exhibition
The MCHAP 2014/15 Exhibition of nominated works in the Americas realized between January 2014 and December 2015 will be open for public viewing at S. R. Crown Hall on March 4th and 5th between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
The MCHAP Jury will review works of architecture which have been nominated by over 70 nominators from throughout the Americas. Nominations were received in January and February and are included in the exhibition to be held during the first MCHAP 2014/15 jury session. The jury will consider these works for both the MCHAP 2014/15 and the MCHAP.emerge 2014/15 that focuses on works by emerging architecture practices.
The MCHAP 2014/15 Jury will include Jury President Stan Allen, architect and former Dean of Princeton University’s School of Architecture (New York); Florencia Rodriguez, editorial director of Piedra, Papel y Tijera publishers (Buenos Aires); Ila Berman, Professor of Architecture, University of Waterloo (Waterloo), Jean Pierre Crousse of Barclay & Crousse (Lima), and Dean Wiel Arets (Chicago).
MCHAP 2014/15 Jury President Stan Allen
Stan Allen is a registered architect in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. From 2002 to 2012 he served as Dean of the School of Architecture at Princeton University where he is currently the George Dutton ’27 Professor of Architecture. In 2011 he was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects and in 2012, elected to the National Academy of Design.Stan Allen holds degrees from Brown University, The Cooper Union and Princeton. After working for Richard Meier in New York and Rafael Moneo in Madrid, he established his independent practice in 1990. From 1999 - 2003, he worked in collaboration with James Corner/Field Operations, during which time they won competitions for the French Embassy Garden in New York and the re-use of the Fresh Kills Landfill in Staten Island.
MCHAP 2014/15 Juror Wiel Arets
Wiel Arets, an internationally acclaimed architect, educator, industrial designer, theorist, and urban designer known for progressive academic research and hybrid design solutions, has been dean of the IIT College of Architecture since the fall of 2012. Prior to joining IIT, he was a professor of building planning and design at the Berlin University of the Arts. Born and educated in the Netherlands, he received his Master in Science in Architecture from the Technical University of Eindhoven in 1983 and, in the same year, founded Wiel Arets Architects (WAA). WAA has studios in Amsterdam, Maastricht (the Netherlands), and Zürich. W. Arets has served as MCHAP Inaugural Cycle Jury member.
MCHAP 2014/15 Juror Jean Pierre Crousse
Jean Pierre Crousse is principal of Barclay & Crousse Architecture, cofounded with Sandra Barclay in France in 1994. They opened a practice in Lima in 2006, pursuing his professional activity in France with the collective Atelier Nord Sud. Crousse is Associate Professor of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He has previously been professor at the Paris Belleville School of Architecture (1999-2006) and visiting professor at the Reggio-Calabria University (Italy), The National University of El Litoral (Argentina), Diego Portales University (Chile) and Los Andes University (Colombia). As part of his academic research, Crousse has co-edited, with Oscar Malaspina, the book Architecture, Pedagogy and Innovation, published by the PUCP. He has participated in the Harvard GSD South America Project initiative with a research about the impact of infrastructure in the Peruvian Amazon basin.
MCHAP 2014/15 Juror #3 Ila Berman
Ila Berman is O’Donovan Director of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. She has received numerous honors and awards, including the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Design, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada Fellowships, AIA Awards and the President’s Award at Tulane University, where she was a Favrot Professor and Associate Dean of the School of Architecture until 2007. She was also the founding director and Principal Investigator of URBANbuild, an outreach architectural and urban design program for which she received a $300,000 HUD/URAP Grant, and she published its work in URBANbuild local global, co-authored with Mona El Khafif. Additional collaborative research and design projects include New Orleans: Strategies for a City in Soft Land, with Joan Busquets and Felipe Correa, and From Grid to Matrix, a theoretical analysis of shifting paradigms in late 20th century architectural practice.
MCHAP 2014/15 Juror #4 Florencia Rodriguez
Florencia Rodriguez is an architect and critic as well as founder and editorial director of Piedra, Papel y Tijera publishers in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her editorial work is complemented by other development and dissemination activities aimed at triggering cultural “agitation” to provoke and inspire a collective evolution of the discipline. In 2010 Rodriguez created the publication PLOT, a platform committed to the dissemination of practices and critical thinking about contemporary architecture. One of its main aims is to integrate Latin-American architecture within global debates and production, and to promote the active role of criticism and theory in the transformation of our built environment. With the same intention, she has previously curated symposia and exhibitions such as “hEX, Arquitectura Argentina Contemporánea” (2007), “Nunca Fuimos Eternos” (2008) and “Post Post Post” (2009/11); collaborated in the Buenos Aires Biennale (since 2007); and coordinated the program of Centro de Estudios de Arquitectura Contemporánea of the Torcuato Di Tella School of Architecture (2009, 2010) among other activities.
