CoA PhD director Michelangelo Sabatino and architectural historian Stephen Fox published an article titled "Howard Barnstone: Mid-Twentieth Century Architecture in Houston and the Crises of American Liberalism" in Arris – Journal of the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians.
The buildings of the Houston architect Howard Barnstone (1923-1987) coincide with the apex of American liberalism during the postwar decades of the twentieth century. The article examines Barnstone’s houses and institutional buildings and reveals how they mirrored postwar liberal identity and subject positions as well as subsequent adjustments to those positions as contradictions in the liberal project emerged.
