Friends, family, and colleagues of Arthur S. Takeuchi (June 16, 1931–October 28, 2022) honored the longest-serving full-time tenured professor at IIT College of Architecture and the last of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s students on the faculty during a memorial on April 1, 2023.
Friends and faculty speaking in remembrance of Takeuchi include Professor Mahjoub Elnimeiri; former student David Hovey Sr., and John Vinci; former faculty member San Utsunomiya; and Reed Kroloff, Rowe Family College of Architecture Dean Endowed Chair.
Outside of teaching, Takeuchi is known for his award-winning work at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill on the Richard J. Daley Center (previously known as the Chicago Civic Center); Central Motor Bank in Jefferson City, Missouri; and BMA Tower in Kansas City, Missouri; as well as his independent work on the Greenwald penthouse apartment on Mies’ Commonwealth Promenade; the Metropolitan Corporation of America office in Mies’ Seagram Building; and the innovative Modular Schools for Chicago Public Schools. Takeuchi’s teaching and architectural legacies continue through his work and the work of his students, including Ron Krueck, Hovey, and IIT Architecture Professor Dirk Denison.
