On November 4 the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize and the College of Architecture hosted architects Sandra Barclay and Jean Pierre Crousse to present “Landscapes of Intimacy” for the college’s annual Victor A. Morgenstern Family Foundation Lecture.
The architects are the co-founders of Barclay & Crousse, a firm first founded in Paris but since relocated to the architects’ home country of Peru. The firm’s work binds together the most current advances in technology with designs that center on the quality of life of its dwellers and the conditions of the landscape their designs occupy. This ethos is typified in any number of Barclay & Crousse’s residential and public works throughout Peru, from Casa Huayoccari in Cusco to the Place of Remembrance cultural center in Lima.
In 2018 the firm was awarded the MCHAP for Edificio E, a university campus at Universidad de Piura, comprising 11 buildings interconnected by alleys, ramps, and stairs in the arid climate of the Sechura Desert in northern Peru. The jury recognized Edificio E for its exceptional response to both program and context: the architects reimagine the social possibilities of warm-climate building typologies to create supportive and dynamic social spaces, as well as exceptionally beautiful architecture.
