William F. Baker is the Structural and Civil Engineering partner for the Chicago and London offices of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM). As one of the most accomplished and visible structural engineers worldwide, Mr. Baker is best known for developing the ‘buttressed core’ structural system for the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest man-made structure. However, his expertise also extends to long-span roof structures, Korean Air Lines Operations Hangar, the Virginia Beach Convention Center, as well as specialty structures such as the Broadgate Exchange House and the GM Renaissance Center’s North lobby.
Mr. Baker received a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri in 1975 and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1980. Joined the architecture and engineering firm SOM in 1981 and eventually became a partner in 1996.
